Fire Damage & Structural Risks

After a fire...

concrete and masonry structures can suffer significant damage that may not be immediately visible. The intense heat from the fire can cause concrete to weaken, crack, or spall, where the surface layers break off due to the stress caused by expansion and contraction. In masonry, mortar joints can loosen, and cracks can form in brick or stone, compromising the strength and stability of the structure.

To accurately assess the integrity of a concrete or masonry structure after a fire, a combination of methods is used. First, scanning techniques, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), can help detect internal damage like voids, cracks, or areas of weakness in the concrete without causing any further damage. Once the scanning reveals potential issues, coring is often performed, where cylindrical samples of concrete are drilled from the structure.

These core samples are then analyzed for internal damage. Finally, a compressive strength test is carried out on the core samples to measure the concrete’s ability to bear loads and determine whether it has lost its strength due to the fire.

Together, scanning, coring, and compressive strength testing provide a comprehensive assessment of the damage, helping engineers make an informed decision about whether the structure can be safely repaired or if further reinforcement or rebuilding is necessary.

Importance of Testing Fire-Damaged Concrete

IMG_2434.jpeg

🔥 Evaluates Concrete Strength – Determines the compressive strength of fire-exposed concrete.

🔥 Ensures Structural Stability – Verifies the integrity of existing slabs and masonry.

🔥 Essential for Permits – Required for building and reconstruction approvals.

🔥 Meets Los Angeles City & County Building Codes – Ensures compliance with local regulations.

Our Services

✅ Masonry & Concrete Core Sampling – Extracting cylindrical sections for lab testing to assess structural integrity.

✅ Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning – Non-invasive scanning to detect rebar, conduits, and voids before drilling.

✅ Compression Testing – Strength evaluation of concrete, brick, and mortar to meet compliance.

✅ Structural Assessments – Helping property owners, developers, engineers, architects & contractors determine the physical properties of the core and the concrete or masonry suitability for bearing construction loads.
